The Brain Gut Connection

The Brain Gut Connection

There is much evidence that what you eat affects so many levels of cognitive and neurological functions.

In Alzu.org a website created to educate oneself in understanding Alzheimer’s and Dementia there are many references to Nutrition and the relationship to prevention or delay of the disease.

Thyroid, Heart Health, Liver function, Kidney and the Lymphatic System are connected with food intake and the Neuro pathways that send signals to every system in our bodies.

Many of the studies about Nutrition, Exercise and Life Style are more recent showing  patterns that determine one’s longevity, brain function and Heart Health.

I’ve listened to so many experts in the various field of expertise such as Dr. Hyman ( Dr’s Farmacy podcast), Dr. Peter Attia ( The Drive podcast), Dr Isaacson ( Alzheimer’s Research Institute),  Dr Thomas Dayspring (World renown expert in Lipidology)  and Dr Ted Naiman (The Protein Code) as well as Neuro- biologist like Andrew Huberman ( The Huberman podcast) that all clearly define patterns in what we eat, drink affecting functionality of every organ and more importantly brain function.

The Gut and the gut microbiome is now commonly referred to as our “2nd” brain and with mounting evidence connection brain function to signals dispatched by the microbiome.

A must listen podcast I would highly recommend:

Nutrients for Brain Performance The Huberman Lab

Dr. Huberman reviews the three factors: gut-brain signaling, perceived taste, and learned associations that combine with the metabolic and blood-sugar-elevating effects of food to determine what foods we seek and prefer. Amazingly, it’s not just about what tastes good to us. Next, Dr. Huberman explores how we can leverage the neural circuits of learned food preference toward seeking and enjoying the right foods for brain health and performance. He also reviews new data on non-caloric sweeteners and why consuming them with glucose-elevating foods can be detrimental, in some cases rapidly leading to insulin dysregulation. This episode covers more than ten actionable tools for those seeking to improve and/or maintain brain function. It explains modern neuroscience underlying our sense of taste, our food-seeking preferences, and brain metabolism.

Dr Huberman is one of many that provide a wealth of knowledge and continually remind me to do what is best for me to optimize my health, aging and cognitive function, so that I can live a vital, and more importantly independent life as time goes on.

I desperately want to squeeze every ounce of this life and would encourage others to really think about time, how fast it passes, and the repercussions that we witness every day pertaining to our elderly loved one’s that have difficulty remembering what was just said, are having difficulty getting up without pain and relay on others to feed, clothe or bath them.

Live right, do right- Be Bold or Get Old!
