Leg Strength Starts With Your Feet

We have been taught that to get relief from foot pain-use orthotics or buy some shoes that “support” your arch or help with flat feet. Bad idea and I can lay testimony to falling in that camp and experiencing chronic knee pain, dealing with sciatica issues in my back to name just a couple of ailments I’ve dealt with for over 25 years. I’ve since joined a program -knees over toes as a last ditch effort to get my lower half in some kind of balance with the left leg being so much weaker than my right. Last year when I started the power walking program I had to stop because my gait was poor causing stress in my left foot- so much so that it shot up my leg. Had to take 6 months off and figure out how to create balance. Many of the health and wellness podcasts had mentioned this kneesovertoesguy

I’ve used the program now for 4+months- no pain in my foot since I’ve resumed my power walk and my left knee is steadily improving. The exercises are not terribly difficult, but I’ve been in Colorado and the Smokey Mountains in the last couple months and am in love with hiking. If you would of asked me 2 years ago to go on a hike I would have laughed at the thought. I averaged 8-10 miles of hiking each day and can’t wait to plan the next one.

The feet- one thing Ben Patrick preaches is power from the feet and how we deviate from learning how to walk when we were infants- barefoot. Strength training your feet through using your feet properly starts the kinetic chain of improving your knee, hip and back. It is a process and causes discomfort for a period of time, but at home I’m bare foot all the time and am now a minimalist shoe advocate and have recently purchased 4 pairs of Xero shoes - why, (from their website) Flexible soles let your foot bend and flex naturally. Low-to-the-ground design for balance and agility. The interest in using minimalist shoes was sparked by a conversation with: Beth Lewis: The Art of Stability: Learning about pain, mitigating injury, and moving better through lifeThe Peter Attia Drive. Again a big fan of the shoes although weening off the “cushioned” shoes to the minimalist took some time and frankly a bit of discomfort through the process. See it’s never is too late to change and referencing my 3rd Chapter in life analogy from the “Be Bold or Get Old” previous blog- make change to effect positive pathways in living a productive, vital life as we age and create good habits along the way.

The Health Care system is a monster- 3+ Trillions are spent annually to treat Americans- your Dr. spends 15 minutes , if that, to figure out what’s wrong with you, to prescribe a medication in a honest effort to take care of you, but the problem lies in us. We need to take the necessary “steps” in fixing our own problems, and dedicating time and effort to do so.

Strong Feet, Knees, Hips and Back = mobility +activity. A winning combination.
